Resolution to adopt anti-racist principles and practices, Community book read, and survey

Dexter Community School District, Michigan

Submitted: 2021-07-18

Story:

Dexter Community schools adopted a Resolution to adopt anti-racist principles and practices in June of 2020. This summer they've hired a professor from Columbia University to administer a community book read including the books: Whistling Vivaldi, White Fragility, and Difficult Conversations with a Black Man. The community has been strongly encouraged to participate as have students. At the end of the 2021 school year, WITHOUT parental consent, they administered a diversity, equity, and inclusion survey to all students. It was poorly administered and students were rushed to fill it out and their questions were not answered. The BOE will not tell parents who the professor is who designed the survey or what they are paying him or her. Also, they won't tell what they are paying the professor that is administering the community book read. They say the anti-racist policy was adopted unanimously. Parents are afraid to speak out because of fear of being labeled racist.
