No Left Turn in Education Leads Coalition to Denouncing Bill that Shifts Power Away from Families

No Left Turn in Education opposes Georgia HB1013 due to its potential to enable educators to encourage children to change their gender identities without the knowledge or consent of their parents.

If this bill is signed, K-12 staff could interpret it as permission not only to encourage kids to question their biological sex, but to influence them to begin transitioning, including taking irreversible steps to change their bodies.

No Left Turn in Education Chief Operating Officer and Georgia Chapter President Melissa Jackson said, “Parents are already fighting for their fundamental right to direct their child’s education, physical and mental health decisions. This bill would make that fight even harder.”

HB1013 further creates and interconnects numerous existing and newly created taskforces, councils, commissions, and government run agencies aimed at mental health care for minors. The majority of school counselors and psychologists are not adequately trained to diagnose and treat the diverse mental health issues that exist within the K-12 population.

This bill will provide an unprecedented level of government control over mental health care for children, over mental health care choices, decisions, personal freedoms, and privacy. This bill is neither pro-family nor pro-parents’ rights, and the vast number of tentacles in this bill give us considerable concern for the potential mental health overreach by government in K-12 public schools.
