Cambridge High School - Content Discrimination 10th Grade AP ELA

Fulton County School District, Georgia

Submitted: 2021-08-15

Story:

My daughter was asked to write a paper on any controversial topic. She and 2 other girls in the AP ELA class chose Pro-Life. The AP ELA 10th grade teacher told them they could not select that topic because she would NOT be able to give them a passing grade. She stated in all her years the only arguments made were that it was murder or religion. I emailed the teacher that she was suppressing my daughter's free speech. She denied it so I escalated to the Cambridge Principal, Ms. Agans, and copied my District 2 board rep and my District Superintendent. My daughter sadly chose a different topic. The principal, after several emails, finally understood the situation (she first took up for the teacher) and said she would discuss the issue with the teacher. In hindsight, I should have filed a lawsuit based on Content Discrimination. Another parent reported this to me the year before so there seems to be a pattern at Cambridge. After speaking to Dr. Looney the better thing would have been to have my daughter write the paper anyway and get the bad grade. It's hard when the kids get older and are so focused on AP grades. My kids know their rights, she just chose not to fight this battle. We need to instill in our kids that their rights trump the grades.
