SC Johnson and Gateway Technical College Team Up To Offer STEM Scholarships That Leave Out White Males

According to an article on CollegeFix.com, SC Johnson and Gateway Technical College recently began offering a new STEM Scholarship1 valued at $5 million. The SC Johnson STEM Scholars Pathway is only available for female students, underrepresented students of color, and low-income students. While laudable, this scholarship explicitly excludes individuals based on their race regardless of their ability to afford college.

Underrepresented students of color, according to SC Johnson and Gateway, include “American Indian, Alaskan Native, Black (not of Hispanic origin), Hispanic (including persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Central or South American origin), Pacific Islander or other ethnic underrepresented in science and engineering2”. However, contrary to the assertions of the grant requirements, Asians make up 3% of the US population yet account for over 20% of the STEM workforce3. They are, in fact, well over-represented in the STEM fields. Additionally, those of Asian background are the highest grossing wage earners in the United States, according to US Census Bureau data4. What need do top wage earners have competing for limited scholarship funds?

The scholarship also excludes all white men who come from a family whose combined income is more than $50,0003. That means that a white student who has a single mother who makes $51,000 a year while struggling to make ends meet for her 3 children is disqualified for this scholarship while an Asian student, whose parents are a doctor and an attorney making over $225,00 a year, would receive the scholarship. That also means that the white student will likely have student debt while the wealthy Asian student is provided a full scholarship with no out-of-pocket expenses or debt.

This scholarship, while well intentioned, is discriminatory and patently illegal, and a product of the current anti-racist/CRT ideology that has infiltrated higher education and corporations. You cannot fight past discrimination with current discrimination. We call on SC Johnson and Gateway Technical College to end their discrimination against white students. Like the federal farm aid and COVID relief funds that excluded white citizens5, the SC Johnson STEM Scholars Pathway offered by Gateway must also be ended.
